James Bond - Casino Royale

007 - Casino Royale

This Saturday morning I went to a private screening of the new James Bond movie: Casino Royale at the main Odeon Cinema in Leicester Square, two weeks before it’s released to the public. This is where having two flat mates who work in digital film effects comes in really handy * smug overload * and knowing how much I enjoy Bond films, John somehow managed to get me a ticket.

It was a really beautiful crisp London winter morning and we’d only had about 3 hours sleep, so we headed into Leicester Square, grabbed a coffee and some breakfast and headed to the cinema.

Despite the ridiculous amount of security guards shouting “please have your mobile phones and any recording devices ready for collection”, absolutely no one checked my bag and when I was searched, the guy just felt around my crotch area and that was it.

I really wasn’t sure what to expect from this Bond film – number 21 in the series.- although to be honest from the previews I was expecting an action-packed brainless piece of crap – but it was anything but. It’s an absolutely incredibly refreshing take on the series - Daniel Craig is fantastic in the main role and Eva Green is brilliant as the classically British love interest. There are definitely elements of the film which are embarrassingly cheesy and laughable, but it wouldn’t be a Bond film if there weren’t. Just where I expected the film to be over-the-top and ridiculous, it was understated and very well done.

This film is absolutely worth seeing and I will be watching it again when it comes out on the 17th.

I bought the 5th series of Family Guy on DVD earlier this week… I say 5th, but really it’s the second half of the fourth series – for some reason here in the UK they saw fit to release the 4 th series in two parts with 13 & 14 episodes each, while calling both parts the 4th and 5th series. Aside from that the show is as classic as it always is, although it does seem to be getting less and less politically correct and even funnier in the process. The A-Team episode is now my new favourite and their re-make of the title sequence is pure genius.

Well, Aidan, if Security had to search your crotch area, they must have seen something suspiciously odd-shaped, indeed…!!

I’m glad you enjoyed the new Bond movie. :) I’m not fantastically enthused about seeing it - but that could be because currently I’m a little stressed out over my final year at university. But I wouldn’t, for example, turn down a free ticket to see it when it does come out (hint! Hint!!) ;)

Family Guy is pure genius. When you told me to check out the A Team episode, I did so with my father watching over my shoulder. He was thrilled by the nostalgia of it all and even gave a satisfied nod at the end of the theme tune.

My favourite character was Murdoch…. I do believe the first doll I picked out at a toy store was a Murdoch doll…!!

By the way, thanks for letting me watch the Russell Peters DVD again this weekend. I really needed the laughs. :) Until next time, “BE A MAN!!”

[…] We grabbed breakfast and a coffee in the square, which was sorely needed this early on a Sunday morning, and headed to the cinema. Just as with the James Bond screening John invited me to, despite checking everyone around me, none of the security guards checked my bag, but they did take our mobile phones. […]
